Understanding your web traffic is important to attract advertisers to your site. Advertisers will want to know how many unique visitors you receive each day and which pages are the most and least popular. Chances are, they will pay top dollar to advertise on the most popular pages of your site.
Web Traffic Terminology
When you talk to potential advertisers, first define your terminology to make sure you both mean the same thing when you mention a term. For example, a hit is a request for a file, which could be an HTML document, an image, or an audio file. Many times, when referring to web traffic, advertisers will ask for the number of hits but really want to know how many unique visitors you have.
Unique visitors are unique IP addresses of those who visit your site for the first time during a specified period of time, usually 2-24 hours. No matter how many times a person visits your site during that time period, his or her computer’s unique IP address is only counted once. This is one of the most important things to know about your web traffic.
Page views tell you how many times your page was looked at. This tells you nothing about who visited your site, but it does tell you which pages are more popular. This is good to know for your advertisers. Dividing the number of page views by the number of unique visitors helps you to know if people browse through your site or if they leave right away. A large number of people leaving your page might mean it takes too long to load.
